How to Twitter: How to tweet
How to use Twitter to grow your business
You have probably heard of what Twitter is, you may even have a Twitter account. When you have finished reading this you might want more than one Twitter account! Whether you have none, one, or many. There are many good business reasons to employ Twitter in your businesses marketing.
You must hurry because "first mover advantage" is still a big opportunity. Some very famous people are promoting Twitter - Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross, and Barrack Obama. Very high caliber businesses are using it too - CNN, The New York Times and NASA. Twitter is proven to attract a lot of people and first mover advantage could soon be gone for ever!
Why is Twitter so valuable for growing your business?
I have seen this before, many times. I am David White CEO and founder of Weboptimiser Group Ltd. I was the first in the UK to set up a search engine marketing company and probably one of the first in the world to have done so.
I was able to register both Weboptimiser with an 's' in the UK and with a 'z' to cover the US: Weboptimizer! Now everyone knows what optimisation (optimization!) is. I have set standards and helped determine best practice for the industry. I continue to champion ethical optimisation.
I saw the advent of broadband, we work in that industry too. But like the early web, search engine marketing and then broadband, there were a few years delay before business people picked up on the business advantage.
So now I am introducing you to how to use Twitter as a business growth tool - so you can take your "first mover advantage" - I will explain why it is not too late - yet - even if you already have a Twitter account...
Twitter was established in 2006, by November 2008 it had 4-5 million users. So the classic two year lag time has passed and here we are - it is taking off right now! Just to prove the point, this year Twitter is seen as the third largest social media network after Facebook and Myspace. There were 55 million visitors in March 2009 and has a phenominal growth rate of 1382% according to Wikipedia.
The "Smart way" to Twitter!
Twittering can be fun, it can be fast and it can be easy, so easy you might be ashamed to think yourself 'lazy'. We are here to let you know that there is nothing to be ashamed of. It is so easy to Twitter. It really is possible to use Twitter to build your business - in just a few minutes a day. As well as 'lazy' I think you would agree, that is smart too...
You need followers...
Every successful business uses, needs or has a mailing list. You can use Twitter to build your mailing list in record time… At Twitter every one opts-in to hear what you want to say, as your follower, you do not need to ask, you do not need permission. You do not need to stuff envelopes and you do not even need to pay for stamps!
Top 10 reasons to drive your Twitter following:
- Drive more traffic to your website and raise your profile
- Promote specific events / conferences
- Announce new updates, new initiatives, new services etc.
- Demonstrate a customer centric focus
- Search current trends in real time
- Share best practice, knowledge, ideas and information
- Reach and engage with your targeted audience
- Keep people informed of your latest news
- Turn prospects into Advocates
- Develop new contacts
So, before we get going, here is a quick start guide to making it all happen, this should take you no more than just a few minutes – then I can get on with the real business...
So the bottom line is the more followers you have on Twitter, the more people you can talk to. Your followers are your mailing list. You can't buy the list, you don't need to stuff any envelopes or pay for stamps. You just have to write a very short text. Literally, like a text, you can only write messages that are no longer than 140 characters long.

"Social Media... will have to be part of our marketing mix."
Having been very sceptical I opened a Twitter account and put my focus areas in the bio.
I was followed shortly after by someone else in my industry. I looked at his page and visited his site following his link from his twitter account. His business seemed like an ideal partner. A normal phone call did not get an immediate response. A Twitter direct message got an immediate reply. We talked on the phone and we have planned a meeting that is expected to produce a commercial agreement between us.
This shows how quickly, easily and cheaply, no cost, social media can be used as a source of potential business and will have to be part of our marketing mix. I look forward to more ideas that we can implement from David White.
